Happy 250th Birthday to the U.S. Navy

The U.S. Navy is celebrating its 250th birthday in October, with an origin predating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. As the most powerful naval force in the world due to total displacement, global presence and technological superiority, the U.S. Navy protects our nation at sea and defends America’s interests around the globe.

Over 330,000 Active-Duty members serve in the U.S. Navy, answering the call to keep our seas open and free. The United States has always been a strong maritime nation, backed by the incredible men and women who protect our country, day in and day out.

Answering The Call for 250 years

Established on October 13, 1775, by the second Continental Congress, the U.S. Navy was born, consisting of just two vessels. After the Revolutionary War, the Navy was temporarily dismantled before being established permanently by President George Washington in 1794 under the Naval Act.

The U.S. Navy has been the globe’s most powerful maritime force for more than 100 years and has fought courageously in every war the United States has been involved in, defending our freedom at sea and at home. As the maritime industry continues to expand worldwide, the U.S. Navy remains of vital importance for protecting our nation’s maritime interests.

Silver Ships Most Valued Partner

The U.S. Navy is the largest customer of Silver Ships. For nearly 30 years, our team has designed and manufactured vessels used for critical training and maritime operations, including the Naval Special Warfare Surface Support Craft, which supports the Special Warfare branch for ocean diver insertion and swimmer support, and the High-Speed Maneuvering Surface Target boat, used as live-fire ordnance training targets.

Silver Ships is proud of our partnership with the U.S. Navy, who has defended our freedom and protected our waters for two and a half centuries, and we recognize the many veterans who make Silver Ships their home post-service. Silver Ships proudly supports the Mobile Council of the Navy League and their mission to enhance and support local active-duty sea service members and their families within the southern Alabama area; informing local public and elected officials of the importance of strong sea services; and supporting local youth programs such as the Sea Cadets, Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) and college NROTC programs.
